Many thanks to the 16 folks who completed the survey so far. We certainly hope to have more input from KapCC to share with the UHCC-wide group, especially from such a big campus — let’s see if we can double the number of responses! Make sure your voice is heard on Gen Ed. Just three questions; just three minutes  🙂

tl;dr: We’d like you to complete this survey (by Wed, Aug 30) to provide your input as we work on creating a UHCC-wide definition of Gen Ed.

If you’ve been following along with the system-wide Gen Ed Revision, you probably know that progress has stalled a bit, as getting the four-year campuses and the two-year campuses to see eye-to-eye has proven difficult.

Given this situation, the Acting VPCC, Della Teraoka, has convened a 2023 – 2024 UHCC Gen Ed Inquiry Team comprised of two faculty and one administrator from each UHCC campus. The team is dedicated to learning about the current trends and best theories and practices in General Education, to articulating a shared understanding of the meaning of General Education and its value, and to engaging faculty in critical conversations. The Team’s charge is to …

  • Participate in the AAC&U summer virtual General Education Institute from June 5-9, 2023 as part of a small team.
  • Meet at least once during the summer after the institute to debrief on what was learned, and create a plan for the 2023-2024 academic year.
  • Meet monthly during the 2023-2024 academic year to continue work on the plan, which includes researching best practices, reviewing General Education programs at other well-regarded community colleges, and creating shared understanding across the CCs of current Gen Ed practices.
  • Offer or host workshops on their respective campuses to share what has been learned with regards to General Education.
  • Attend an AAC&U Conference.
  • Present on their initial findings at the 2024 HISSI conference on March 8, 2024.

Your knowledge and experiences are vital to identifying what we communicate to our students about General Education and how we do this; the value of our General Education and how we convey this; and how we can reflect upon, learn from, and improve our practices. To this end, we’d like to gather your feedback on these topics, which we will share with the General Education Inquiry Team in early September. The Team will then utilize your responses to craft a shared definition of General Education.

Please complete the Gen Ed survey by Wed, Aug 30, to provide your input.

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to hearing from you and appreciate your participation in this important, ongoing project.
