Lamakū Spring Course '25 Prep.

Aloha mai kākou,

We’ve received numerous inquiries regarding VPCC Teraoka’s memo and would like to share the following information and resources to highlight and clarify the pertinent points.

In Spring 2025

You may choose to host ALL classes in Lamakū.
In this case, there is no special action required – just keep prepping your Lamakū course sites.

There is no option to host your classes SOLELY in Laulima.
All faculty using the university LMS must host a minimum of 2 course preps* in Lamakū before being eligible to request an exemption to use Laulima for other classes.

*What qualifies as a course prep?
Each unique course (e.g., ENG 100, ENG 101) counts as a course prep, but not every section qualifies as a unique course prep. Sections of courses offered for the same length of time in the same modality qualify as a single course prep. For example, if you teach multiple sections of a course, it may be a single course prep or multiple course preps:

Single Course Prep of ENG 100:
(1) Teaching multiple sections of ENG 100 and they all go for 16 weeks in a face-to-face modality

Multiple Course Preps of the ENG 100:
(1) Teaching 2 sections of ENG 100 face-to-face
(2) Teaching 1 section of ENG 100 online

You may choose to request an exemption in order to host classes in Laulima after satisfying the minimum 2-course prep in Lamakū requirement.
You must submit an exemption form by November 30. This will prompt ITS to create a Laulima site for the course(s) you identify and remove your corresponding Lamakū live sites for Spring.

This Spring 2025 Decision Tree is intended to walk you through the decision-making process for Spring 2025.
After Spring 2025

No UHCC classes will be hosted in Laulima.
We’re pau with teaching in Laulima…but you will NOT lose access to our Laulima content yet!

When will Laulima go away and what are the implications for my content?
Laulima is currently scheduled to be archived on January 1, 2026. At that time, faculty and staff will continue to have direct access to Laulima content. However, an LMS Retention Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will be implemented. This document has been drafted in consultation with the UH Data Governance team at the system level; preliminary estimates for data retention have been approximately 5-7 years, but the document is still under review. This practice of retaining content (and subsequently deleting it) for a specified period of time will go into practice and will be applied to both Laulima and Lamakū content moving forward.
