This October, 465 Kapi’olani students registered in the Fall 2023 semester were qualified to join the online chapter of the Kapi’olani Community College National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) – representing 10.5% of home-based students enrolled this semester.

To qualify for NSLS at Kapi’olani CC, a student must have between 6.0 and 36.0 credits completed at the end of Spring 2023 and have earned a minimum 2.5 GPA. Although all students that meet the criteria are welcome, personalized invitations were mailed to students in Accounting, Liberal Arts, Hawaiian Studies, Hospitality and Tourism, IT, New Media Arts, and Second Language Teaching majors. Early College students who met the criteria were also invited!

If you teach classes that fulfill requirements for any of these majors, chances are that at least two students in each of your classes has been invited. If you advise or counsel continuing students from these majors, at least one out of 10 students have been invited.

It is our vision to build a strong community of students who learn to become global leaders through meaningful service and professional development opportunities.

We know that students are seeking opportunities to connect, grow, and serve others.
The NSLS offers a step-by-step program for students to receive training on communication and working styles, goal setting, and supporting others in a success networking team.

Do you know of any students who could benefit from this program who were not invited? You can nominate them!  Email kapnsls@hawaii.edu to learn how.

The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) is the largest collegiate leadership honor society in the United States, with over 650 chapters and more than a million members nationwide.  In Hawai’i, new NSLS chapters have started at UH Mānoa, UH West Oahu, Hawai’i Community College, Maui College, and our chapter, currently in its fourth year.

The NSLS differentiates itself from traditional honor societies in that students must complete a step-by-step leadership development program. In addition to leadership training, members are able to participate virtually in Live Speaker Broadcasts.  The lineup of thought leaders for this semester will motivate you into action!

10/17/23 – Arnold Schwarzenegger at 1:00 pm HST
10/24/23 – Adam Grant at 1:00 pm HST
11/8/23 – Emily Balcetis at 1:00 pm HST

Upon completion of the program, members receive their Foundations of Leadership certificate and take their place among inducted students at their campus and across the country. Inducted members are able to list their affiliation on all statements of personal accomplishment, including their resume, and will be listed in the Honors Society section of Kapi’olani Community College Commencement materials. Once a member joins the NSLS, they can continue on in their leadership development at any transfer campus with an active chapter, or in the online program.

For more information, contact current co-advisors Angela Coloretti McGough and Devon Peterson at kapnsls@hawaii.edu.

*Qualified students have declared one of the identified certificate programs or majors, have between a 2.5 and 3.49 GPA, and were not invited previously to the NSLS or be a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Chapter at Kapi’olani Community College.  Any student that meets the GPA and credits criteria, regardless of major or participation in PTK, may choose to be a part of the NSLS. There is a one-time $95 membership fee.
