Hula is not only popular — it is distinctly Hawaiian: conveying Hawaiian history, genealogy, and tales of ancestors through its beautiful, graceful, and rhythmic dance movements.  Steeped in centuries of culture and tradition, hula is used as a form of storytelling.  There are two styles: a) hula kahiko (old-style), which exhibits less elaborate music and is accompanied by traditional instruments such as seed-filled gourds, split bamboo sticks, pahu drums, and castanets;  and b) hula ʻauana (contemporary). which was modernized and introduced instruments like the ukulele and guitar.

For the Kū Pūnāwai class, Kumu Hula Hanohano will teach the contemporary style instead of kahiko.  She is an excellent instructor who gives clear, understandable explanations and demonstrations.  Beginners and experienced dancers alike all benefit from her teachings.

The health and wellness benefits gained from hula are well worth the time and energy invested. Plus, the positive and supportive relationships made with fellow dancers and with Kumu Hula Hanohano are beyond measure.  Come join the Kū Pūnāwai hula class.
