Interested in studying abroad in South Korea next summer? Read below to learn about the new Korean Intensive Summer Language Program (KISLP) hosted by the American Councils for International Education. 

Kapi‘olani Community College students are eligible to apply for a new program that will launch in Summer 2023. The Korean Intensive Summer Language Program (KISLP) hosted by the American Councils for International Education was designed to help meet the growing demand for Korean language programming overseas. Students will participate in an immersive study abroad program at Chungbuk National University (CBNU) in Cheongju, South Korea from June 19 to August 11, 2023.

This program is open to all U.S. undergraduate and graduate students who have completed one year of Korean language study or the equivalent. Students will complete approximately 140 hours of classroom instruction in Korean language and culture, housing in university dormitories on the CBNU campus, comprehensive onsite support from a U.S. Resident Director, engaging and varied cultural activities, and extensive opportunities for participants to connect with local South Korean families and peers.

Dates: June 19 to August 11, 2023
Location: Cheongju, South Korea
Features: weekend host families, excursions & cultural activities, housing & meals, support services from an on-site resident director

Program eligibility:
Applicants must meet the following requirements, including a language prerequisite.

  1. Participants must have taken at least two semesters of university-level Korean or the equivalent before the program begins in June.
  2. Minimum GPA of 2.7
  3. Applicants must be at least 18 years old by the application deadline

Scholarships available:
The program costs are estimated at $8,500. Students are eligible to apply for a variety of scholarships and fellowships to cover the study abroad costs. Applicants will need to first apply to the study abroad program before seeking funding from the following sources:

  1. American Councils Financial Aid
  2. Judith Ehm Foundation Fellowships
  3. National Security Education Program David L. Boren Scholarship
  4. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship (Gilman)
  5. Queen Kapi‘olani International Travel Scholars Endowed Fund
  6. Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA)
