Honolulu Zoo achieves Sensory Inclusive certification

Kulture City Headphone Zone Sign

In partnership with the Honolulu Zoo Society and concessionaire SSA Group, the Honolulu Zoo has earned KultureCity’s Sensory Inclusive certification. This prestigious designation makes the zoo one of only two establishments in Hawai’i equipped to accommodate individuals with sensory processing needs and invisible disabilities, reaffirming the zoo’s commitment to an inclusive and welcoming environment for all visitors.

The certification process included comprehensive training for zoo staff led by KultureCity’s experts, featuring psychologists along with individuals with lived experience. Staff members were equipped with practical strategies to support guests with autism, post-traumatic stress disorder, dementia, ADHD, traumatic brain injuries, and other conditions.

As part of this initiative, sensory bags containing noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, and other resources will be available for guests to borrow. Additionally, the zoo has established designated quiet areas and enhanced signage to assist sensory-sensitive visitors.
