On June 20, 2024, Navahine v. Hawai‘i Department of Transportation made history as the first, youth-led constitutional climate case focused on decarbonizing transportation to reach a Settlement Agreement.
We think that every young person in Hawaii should know that the State of Hawaii has agreed that youth have the RIGHT to a clean and healthful environment.
Aug 22: We are hosting a webinar with the Navahine lawyers (yes, it will be recorded) who will provide an overview of the case, the Youth Council process, and what this means for youth in Hawaii.
Then, on Sept. 7: Punahou will host an Educator’s Night for UH, UHCC, public and private K-12 schools to talk about how to integrate this landmark case into various subjects and lesson plans. Our Children’s Trust lawyers will be available to talk with educations, and they will provide videos, powerpoints, and so forth. (*Stipends will be awarded to faculty who create, teach, and share back something about what they create to teach young people about their right to a clean and healthful environment. The Educator’s Night is in-person only.)
We’re partnering with Our Children’s Trust and Punahou School to share the story of Navahine, so that its lessons and outcomes can be carried forward in our collective work with young people across Hawai‘i. We hope you can join the conversation on August 22nd!
Please join us
