Aloha kākou,

May Day, or Lei Day, is a cherished tradition in Hawai‘i, celebrating the beauty of our islands, the spirit of aloha, and the symbolic beauty of the lei. This year, as part of the Kūloaʻa Project’s campus event to celebrate May Day on Thursday, May 1st, we invite you to join us in learning and performing siva Samoa at our May Day Festival! Stay tuned for more details about the event coming soon.

While May Day is traditionally a celebration of the lei, it also offers us an opportunity to honor the diverse cultures that make up our shared Pacific identity. Through siva Samoa, we’ll embrace the artistry of Pacific dance, strengthening the connection between our cultures and communities.

Guided by Joel Sovea, a Peer Mentor for the Native Hawaiian Basic Needs Program under the Kūloaʻa Project, students, faculty, and staff will have the opportunity to learn this beautiful and expressive Samoan dance. Joel’s passion for cultural connections and community makes this an incredible chance to not only learn siva Samoa but also share it in a meaningful way during our May Day festivities.
