🔥 How Can We Help Student ACHIEVE: 2 pm to 4 pm

Ever wonder how to get more students engaged in your class, program, or service? What are their experiences on our campus? Pop in anytime to hear what student researchers found when they collected stories across campus and how they would like to integrate student voices and experiences into the future direction of our college.

This is the last of the Pāoa panels, and faculty/staff have used these sessions to provide input and ask the students for their thoughts on how to improve their programs and classes.

Today, our KapCC students are trying to solve the following problems (sessions are an hour unless marked):

  • 🌱How do students help educate our local communities about the endemic/indigenous plants at KapCC and make them more visible? @ 10 am.
  • 💧We’ve got  native birds, humpback whales, & urban farms from the Marine Options Program @ 1 pm
  • 🌳How can we help cultivate native plant species in Wailupe valley and restore the natural habitat of the Oʻahu ʻElepaio, an endangered native bird?   @ 2 pm.
  • 📱 Learn how sustainability intersects with Tik Tok, Pacific Islander cultural lifestyles, Red Hill Water crisis, mental health, foster families, and more with projects Radford High School Early College Program @ 2 pm
  • 💖Students in the Resilience Corps Leaders (RCL) program are mapping out stories of place-based resilience from kupuna and building toward a stronger community @ 3 pm

Throughout the day:

🦺What can I do to mitigate the damage to my community after a natural disaster? Today, we have presentations that connect students’ lives with coastal erosion, megadroughts, Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Ike, Typhoon Haiyan, and Typhoon Mangkhut.

Today, our KapCC students are trying to solve the following problems (sessions are an hour unless marked):

  • 🕊️ An important navigational guide, the Manu-o-Kū makes its home on our campus, and students track their nesting habits every semester. Learn about how the Manu-o-Kū are doing and where they nest (like the parking lot!) @ 10 am.
  • Jenny Brown asks how can we sustain watersheds in a responsible manner and promote resilience @ 11 am
  •  Learn about innovative housing solutions for the houseless @ 11 am and dating and plantation nostalgia @ 1 pm in session by the CUH & KapCC research program
  • 🦟Mosquitos bugging you lately? Learn about what they like and don’t like @ 2 pm to 4 pm

Throughout the day:

🦺What can I do to mitigate the damage to my community after a natural disaster? Today, we have presentations on Hurricane Michael, Big Island eruptions, climate change, and typhoons in S. Korea. 

🌄What can I find at the center of my ahupuaʻa and does it connect to moʻolelo or community planning? Engineers map out Waikele and Waimanō today.

🌊Tips and Tricks to Help You Enjoy SURF Next Week Monday through Wednesday @ 10 AM to 4 PM!

The Student Undergraduate Research Fair (SURF) starts next week Monday and our agenda is live! Here are some quick tips and tricks from our quick guide to get you up to speed on the event so you can engage with students.

Want to see all the session details in one space or send them to someone? Check out the new SURF Highlights section on our website.

You don’t need to stay for an hour. You can hop in any room for roughly 15-20 min to catch one presentation, thank them, and go back to other things. Bring your lunch or snacks!

Did you just listen to a 10-minute presentation in Greek and can’t think of a single question? Feel free to ask them to clarify, share your own knowledge or experiences with the topic, or use our handy list of questions, This is a great way to connect students to other campus resources as well!

Click on the poster pdf on the agenda before joining a room to see a clear and accessible version of the poster. We love the closed captions to catch hard to hear moments as well!

🦺 What Can We Learn from Natural Disasters @ SURF?

What can I do to mitigate the damage to my community after a natural disaster? What policies and strategies are in place to protect us and how can we improve? Students in the OEST 101 class find personal and place-based connections to the natural hazards and investigate what happens when hurricanes, earthquakes, or climate change hits their neighborhoods.
