Excellence in ONLINE Teaching Award (EOTA) 2021/22

We hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving! We are very thankful for the wonderful nominations that have come in for the 2021/22 VCAA Excellence in Online Teaching Award (EOTA). This award recognizes outstanding educators who teach online courses at Kapi‘olani Community College.

This Fall’s nomination form will be open until the end of this week. You may nominate any faculty member who has taught at least one online class at Kapi‘olani CC in the previous or current year and exhibits an extraordinary level of online teaching effectiveness, exceptional course design and creativity, and regular and substantive interaction that benefits students.

Please submit your nominations via this Google Form! Individuals must receive at least three independent nominations from a current Kapi‘olani CC student, colleague, or community member to be considered for the award. The Fall nominations will close on Sunday, December 5, 2021. Mahalo!

Have you interacted with an online teacher that made you feel heard and excited to learn? Have you visited an online course site filled with resources that makes learning engaging and fun? If your answer is yes, then please consider nominating this individual for the EOTA, recognizing outstanding educators who teach online courses at Kapi‘olani Community College.

You may nominate any faculty member who has taught at least one online class at Kapi‘olani CC in the previous or current year and exhibits an extraordinary level of online teaching effectiveness, exceptional course design and creativity, and regular and substantive interaction that benefits students.

Faculty Information Literacy Award: Designing Meaningful Research Assignments

Do you wish your students would integrate better research sources, be savvy information consumers, and apply critical thinking skills as they evaluate online information? Be one of 10 instructional faculty members to attend two one-hour workshops and create or revise an information literacy assignment for your course. During the two 1-hour workshops on July 20 and July 27, 2021, from 10:00-11:00, you will apply the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education by the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) to your curriculum.

Eligibility: Any instructors who have research-related learning outcomes, such as writing research papers, conducting undergraduate research, or incorporating more critical thinking and information literacy in their curriculum. 

Stipend: $200 upon completion of a report reflecting on their new information literacy assignment implemented in the fall 2021 semester. Limited to 10 instructional faculty (9-month).

Time: Two 1-hour workshops and two hours preparation.

Congratulations New Media Arts 2020 Pele Award Winners!

This past weekend Kapiʻolani Community College New Media Arts students won 8 Pele awards, including Best of Show for Raleigh Harris and his work in the category of Animation/Special Effects. Raleigh took home Pele Gold along with a $1000 prize check. This is the third consecutive year that Kapi‘olani New Media Arts students have won the prestigious Best of Show award. This year’s winners include Liana Young (Silver) for her Publication Design, Cheryl Soong (Gold) for her Integrated Branded Identity Campaign, Christi Gonzalez (Silver) for her Integrated Branded Identity Campaign, Tomy Takemura (Silver) for her Logo Design, Ariana Enomoto (Gold) for her Logo Design, Adrian Remoh Mangahis (Gold) for his Illustration Campaign, and Hannah Woodward (Gold- excerpt above) for her work in Animation/Special Effects.

The Community Building Award recognizes new projects implemented within the last five years that expand and enrich relations within the campus, community and/or the University of Hawai‘i Community Colleges in any given area or discipline.​ (See application for specific criteria.)

The Change Agent Award recognizes excellence and innovation in teaching or service delivery from individuals and/or collaborators within the University of Hawai‘i Community Colleges System. Faculty, staff, or programs that have introduced innovations implemented within the last five years are eligible for nomination. (See application for specific criteria.)

Need to visit another UHCC campus for business? Go on Wo!

Grants will be awarded to eligible faculty and staff for visits to other University of Hawaiʻi Community College campuses to consult with colleagues on program development, delivery of academic support services, facilities, etc. Award winners will be notified by email. Individuals may not apply for more than one Visitor Grant per academic year and approval prior to travel is required. Grant recipients are expected to submit a report on their visit within seven days of the travel. The Grant report should include the date of the visit, a summary of the outcomes, and any next steps that are planned. The Grant report should be sent to your supervisor and to Louise Pagotto as an email attachment. Depending on the nature of the travel, grant recipients will also be required to complete other travel documents required by University of Hawaiʻi policies.

Eligibility: All faculty (including lecturers), clerical, APT, and custodial staff are eligible to apply.
The Award: Each Wo Faculty/Staff Visitor Grant will cover airfare and car rental for neighbor island trips or mileage for Oʻahu faculty driving to other Oʻahu campuses. Up to $20 for meals will also be covered with the total not to exceed $300 for any individual grant (requests to cover the cost of overnight accommodations will be considered on a case-by-case basis). A total of $3,000 per year will be available. Funding does not cover replacement costs for the day the grant recipient is away from her/his campus.
